Dhaka, Feb 20 (V7N) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Ameer, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, has announced that he will voluntarily appear in court and be arrested on February 25, 2025, in protest of the continued imprisonment of Jamaat Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam.
Dr. Rahman made the announcement via a post on his verified Facebook account on Thursday afternoon (February 20), where he criticized the government for what he described as "oppression and discrimination."
In his post, Dr. Rahman addressed his party colleagues and the nation, saying:
"The oppressed people's leader ATM Azharul Islam, a victim of the brutal oppression of fascism, remains imprisoned. Even though all other national leaders have been released one by one, he continues to bear the burden of life in prison."
"It is absolutely not possible for me to stay outside while he remains in prison. We have given the government enough time. In protest of this injustice and to demand his release, I will present myself at the court premises on February 25, 2025, to be arrested."
Dr. Rahman also called on the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs to take necessary steps to arrest him and send him to prison, stating:
"You will find me in the right place at the right time, InshaAllah."
Dr. Rahman’s announcement has stirred strong reactions across the political landscape. While Jamaat-e-Islami supporters see it as an act of defiance, critics argue it is a political maneuver to gain sympathy.
Meanwhile, government officials have yet to make an official comment on the matter. The upcoming February 25 event is expected to draw significant attention, both domestically and internationally.
