Dhaka, Feb 25 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the Awami League government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, of orchestrating a planned conspiracy behind the 2009 Peelkhana massacre, which led to the killing of 57 army officers during the BDR mutiny.
He made these remarks on Monday after paying tribute to the martyrs of the tragedy at Banani Military Cemetery.
BNP’s Allegations Against the Government
- Mirza Fakhrul claimed that the Awami League government was in power at the time and failed to take proper action, which resulted in the two-day-long massacre at Peelkhana.
- He alleged that the incident was a premeditated plot aimed at weakening the country's security and breaking the morale of the army.
- He expressed disappointment that there has been no fair and impartial investigation into the Peelkhana tragedy even after 16 years.
BNP’s Call for Justice
While acknowledging the government's recent decision to declare February 25 as National Martyrs' Day, the BNP leader stressed that the truth must come out through a proper investigation, and those responsible must be punished.
BNP Leaders Pay Tribute
Mirza Fakhrul, on behalf of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, paid respects to the martyred army officers. He reiterated that their sacrifices should not go in vain, and urged for a truly independent and sovereign Bangladesh.
The 2009 Peelkhana mutiny remains one of the darkest chapters in Bangladesh’s history, with ongoing debates over the investigation and accountability of the tragic event.
