Dhaka, Feb 25 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday urged Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to govern with a firm hand and proceed towards holding the national election soon while maintaining neutrality.
Mirza Fakhrul made this comment while addressing a discussion on the BDR carnage, organized by BNP at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, in memory of the martyred army officers who were killed in the 2009 Pilkhana tragedy.
He emphasized that they do not want to hear any allegations of bias against Prof Yunus, as he is a highly respected figure worldwide.
“We hope that you will move towards the election with complete impartiality, completing the minimum necessary reforms as soon as possible,” said Mirza Fakhrul.
He expressed his expectation that Prof Yunus would ensure a free and fair election to bring stability, peace, and prosperity to the future of Bangladesh.
Following the ouster of fascist Hasina through the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, a new opportunity has emerged to build Bangladesh as a democratic and prosperous state.
However, conspiracies are underway to undermine that opportunity, he added.
Mirza Fakhrul accused Sheikh Hasina of conspiring from India to thwart the achievements of the mass uprising and create instability in Bangladesh.
“As part of her conspiracy, efforts are being made to create an unstable situation through various means,” he said.
He said that the interim government was formed through the blood sacrifice of nearly 2,000 students and citizens.
Therefore, the people expect this government to fulfill their aspirations, he said.
He reiterated that stability will not be achieved unless a democratic system is established in the country.
“That is why we have been saying from the beginning that a people's government must be established through a truly impartial election,” he added.
However, he warned that attempts are being made to push the country toward chaos by raising unnecessary questions about the election.
The BNP leader claimed that some groups are deliberately trying to destabilize the country, agitate the people, and incite protests.
“In the same way, they are attempting to create anarchy. This is detrimental to Bangladesh’s independence, democracy, and stability,” he said.
He urged the people of Bangladesh to remain united, set aside disputes, and focus on achieving a democratic system.
BNP does want reform
Addressing criticism, Mirza Fakhrul rejected claims that his party is only pushing for elections without advocating reforms.
“These critics are spreading blatant lies and false propaganda against BNP, particularly on social media,” he said.
“A few individuals, a handful of people, have targeted BNP. They seek to humiliate the party through negative campaigns and propaganda,” he added.
He reaffirmed that BNP has always safeguarded the country’s independence and sovereignty and will continue to do so.
Regarding the Pilkhana carnage, the BNP leader lamented the loss of 57 brilliant army officers, describing it as a premeditated attack.
“So many army officers were not even killed during the Liberation War,” he pointed out.
“So, let us take a vow to protect Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty at any cost, ensure stability, and restore democracy,” he concluded.
