Dhaka, Feb 27 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed his frustration over the lack of clear instructions from the interim government regarding the upcoming national elections. He made these remarks during his welcome address at the party's extended meeting held at the LD Hall premises of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday.

Fakhrul stated that the people of Bangladesh had high hopes for change after the departure of what he referred to as the "fascist Hasina" on August 5. He emphasized that citizens were looking forward to the restoration of their voting rights and the ability to elect their representatives. However, he lamented the absence of clear guidance to facilitate this process.

Reflecting on the struggles of the BNP and its coalition partners, he highlighted the sacrifices made in the pursuit of democracy and the realization of people's rights.

Fakhrul also addressed the deteriorating economic situation in the country, noting rising prices of goods and declining law and order. He expressed concern over the educational environment in institutions, particularly universities, which he claimed were not fostering a conducive atmosphere for learning. He alleged that there are efforts underway to rename universities, disregarding the legacies of prominent scientists and writers from the region's history.

He stated, "We have driven out fascism, we have driven out Sheikh Hasina, and now we are waiting." He warned that certain groups are plotting to undermine democracy and mislead the public about the party's vision of transforming Bangladesh into a modern and prosperous nation, a dream articulated by the party's founder, Ziaur Rahman.

The extended meeting, taking place after a seven-year hiatus, is being presided over virtually by BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, with party Chairperson Khaleda Zia participating as the chief guest.
