Dhaka, Apr 30 (V7N) — BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has criticized the closure of several mills and factories owned by businessmen aligned with the previous Awami League government, calling it a consequence of misguided government policies.
Speaking at a press conference of the BNP's labor wing at the party’s central office in Nayapaltan on Wednesday, Rizvi addressed preparations for a workers’ rally scheduled for Thursday afternoon in the capital. He emphasized that instead of shutting down the establishments, the authorities should have appointed administrators to keep them operational.
“Many workers have lost their jobs unnecessarily. Closing the institutions in the name of action against the guilty has caused harm to innocent laborers,” Rizvi stated.
He also alleged that 71 leaders and activists of the workers' party were killed during the student-public movement between July and August last year. Among the victims, he claimed, were 30 rickshaw-pullers and numerous other floating workers. Rizvi expressed frustration that the sacrifices of the working class are often overlooked.
Highlighting the growing struggles of ordinary workers, he added, “The income of the working people is decreasing. Their lives are overwhelmed by the skyrocketing cost of daily essentials.”
The BNP has called for increased protection of workers' rights and immediate steps to address job losses and rising inflation impacting the labor class.
