Dhaka, Jun 06 (V7N) – Opposition leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has called on Turkey to play a greater role in finding a permanent solution to the Rohingya crisis, describing the country as a trusted and longstanding friend of Bangladesh.
The appeal came following an hour-long meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who is currently on an official visit to Bangladesh. The meeting was held at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka on Friday night and began at around 8:30 pm.
During the discussion, the two sides exchanged views on strengthening bilateral cooperation in several sectors, including the leather, jute and ready-made garment industries. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also urged the Turkish government to expand cooperation in the fields of education, healthcare and defense.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Jamaat chief expressed gratitude to Turkey for its continued humanitarian support for Rohingya refugees. He noted that Turkey has been one of the largest contributors to Rohingya assistance efforts and praised its role in supporting displaced people from Myanmar.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman emphasized the need for greater international efforts to ensure the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their homeland. He expressed hope that Bangladesh-Turkey relations would reach new heights in the coming years through enhanced cooperation and mutual understanding.
The Rohingya crisis remains one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges facing Bangladesh, with more than one million refugees currently residing in camps in Cox's Bazar after fleeing persecution in Myanmar.
