Unemployment in Arum (Kuchu) farming is far from Newton Mandal. He has got success.  Annual income is more than 15 lakhs  
 
Khulna, 22 June 2024- Newton mandal of Ghona Motherdanga village of Rangpur union of Dumuria upazila, known as the granary of Khulna, has seen success in the past two years by cultivating water Arum. He is earning about Tk 15/16 lakhs per year.  His poverty and unemployment are gone.  The wife and children are living in happiness, peace and comfort.  A mature mass of Newton's mass is 35 kg.  .  Newton Arum seedlings are now being cultivated in developed countries like America, France and Italy.
 
Apart from this, through the "Kandal Crop Production Project" of the Department of Agriculture Extension, Newton Arum cultivation has started in 152 upazilas of 64 districts of the country. Apart from pani Arum cultivation, Newton produces papaya, dragon fruit and other products.  He got about 35 lakhs of income from dragon fruit cultivation. He has been cultivating this water Arums' for 19 years and has become widely known throughout the country  .  
 
18 years ago I worked as a laborer in Daulatpur Popular Jute Mill.  While working in jute dust, I got various diseases including shortness of breath, cough.  In such a situation, I left the work of jute and started cultivating water Arum's in the two katha land of the house.  200 seedlings from Kalanagar village of Ani Rupsa upazila.  First time get good profit.  After that, I slowly started to grow the garden of Arum cultivation.  At present we cultivate Arum's in 10 to 12 bigha land.  Along with the cultivation of Arum, we think about agriculture including dragon fruit cultivation, papaya cultivation. 
 
I used to plant paddy in the land before cultivating kachur.  Due to the presence of plants around the land, the paddy would be stunted.  Then my wife said instead of rice put Arum and see what happens?  I started talking about my wife.  Cultivating Arum  My luck is back.  
 
Earlier I could not pay for my daughter's education.  I could not buy milk.  Now my daughter Ghuna is studying in secondary school.  I am very good at farming.  I am happy with my wife and childrenNewton said, this year we have planted about 35/36 thousand saplings on 10/12 bigha land.  Arum is two months old.  Weight is 10/12 kg.  I will harvest when it is 6 months old.  Then the weight of one lot will be 35 kg.  Height will be 10 feet. 
 
The lower portion of the lot will weigh 6/7 kg.  When I cook this Arum, it tastes like sugar.  Arum's itself tastes like standard kachur.  I sell a 35kg Arum for Tk 100.  The garden's small kachus are also sold at 35 taka.  Although the caste is Pani Kochu, this Arum's has become the name of Newtown Kochu throughout the country.  Newton Kuchu is sweet like sugar, tastes very good.  Due to this day by day the demand of Newton Couch is increasing.  We sell all these plants, flowers and vines.  Lati and flowers are also in great demand.  I sell 1 kg Lati for 30/35 taka, I sell a lot of flowers for Tk 1 peach. 
 
Apart from growing Arum, Newton Mandal also grows papaya, fish and dragon fruit.  He told this reporter that his income from dragon fruit will be Tk 30 lakh rupees this year. 
 
Dumuria Upazila Agriculture Officer Insad Ibn Amin said, actually there is no variety called Newton Arum.  Newton Mandal, a successful farmer of Pani Kachur, has got good results by cultivating good Kachur seedlings of local varieties through selection.  benefited   gained popularity.  In this way, slowly after Newton, the name of this piece became Newton Arum. 
 
He said, the water resistance of this local breed of kachus is very high.  Such Arum does not rot in much water, it survives even in little water.  The specialty of this Arum's is that the whole Arum's can be eaten.  In Dumuria upazila, 110 hectares of land are cultivated with local varieties of water Arum's.
