DHAKA, Jan 8, (V7N) –Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal is set to make a decision regarding his participation in the upcoming Champions Trophy after discussions with his family and close friends, according to Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Tamim in Sylhet, Gazi Ashraf stated that the veteran cricketer has sought some time before responding to the selectors.

“There is no immediate decision on this matter. Tamim will consult with his family, friends, and well-wishers before finalizing his stance,” said the Chief Selector.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) faces a January 12 deadline to submit the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy to the ICC. While the selectors are keen to include Tamim in the team, reports suggest he is contemplating retirement from international cricket.

Recently, in a video posted on the YouTube channel of BPL team Chittagong Kings’ brand ambassador Shahid Afridi, Tamim hinted at stepping away from international cricket.

Today’s meeting with Tamim saw mixed signals. Initially, Tamim reportedly told selectors he would no longer play international cricket. However, during a subsequent discussion, he became somewhat optimistic and requested time for further consideration.

Team’s Support for Tamim

Selectors Abdur Razzak and Hannan Sarkar were also present at the meeting. Additionally, team captain Nazmul Hossain and a few other senior players have personally requested Tamim to participate in the Champions Trophy.

“The issue of discussion should remain private. We need to wait for Tamim’s final decision,” said Gazi Ashraf. “I hope everything will become clear in a day or two.”

Tamim’s inclusion would be crucial for Bangladesh, given his experience and record as one of the team’s most consistent performers. However, the selectors are preparing to finalize the squad with or without him, depending on his response.

The Champions Trophy is a critical tournament for Bangladesh, and Tamim’s decision will likely have a significant impact on the team’s dynamics and prospects.
