Chennai, Sep 22 (V7N)- Bangladesh suffered a heavy defeat against India in the first Test of the two-match series at Chennai, losing by a record margin of 280 runs. Set an imposing target of 515 runs, Bangladesh were bowled out for 234, leaving India with a 1-0 lead in the series.

Resuming on day four at 158 for 4, Bangladesh needed another 357 runs to pull off a remarkable victory. However, their hopes of a comeback quickly faded after an early breakthrough by India's Ravichandran Ashwin. Shakib Al Hasan, after a brief stay at the crease, was dismissed for 25, caught by Yashvi Jaiswal off Ashwin's bowling.

Nazmul Hossain Shanto, who had looked Bangladesh’s most promising player, fell agonisingly short of a century, departing for 82 off 127 balls. His dismissal triggered a collapse, with Liton Das (1) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (8) offering little resistance.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the star for India, taking 6 wickets for 88 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with 3 wickets, and Jasprit Bumrah added one to wrap up the victory.

Key Performances:

India’s first innings total of 376 was bolstered by centuries from Ravichandran Ashwin (113) and Ravindra Jadeja (86), with Hasan Mahmud taking 5/83 for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh, in reply, managed just 149 in their first innings, with Shakib Al Hasan top-scoring with 32.

India declared their second innings on 287/4, with Shubman Gill (119*) and Rishabh Pant (109) leading the charge.

Chasing 515, Bangladesh could only muster 234, with Shanto’s 82 standing out amidst the collapse.

India’s dominant win by 280 runs marked Bangladesh’s biggest-ever defeat by runs against their neighbours, surpassing the previous margin of 208 runs.

With this comprehensive victory, India takes a 1-0 lead in the series, leaving Bangladesh with much to ponder ahead of the second and final Test.
