Kuala Lumpur, Jan 06 (V7N) — Following a surge of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China, Malaysia is now reporting an increase in infections. The Malaysian Ministry of Health has issued guidelines urging citizens to wear masks and frequently wash their hands with soap to prevent the spread of the virus.

The virus, which typically causes cold-like symptoms, is more active during the winter season. According to AFP, the virus has been spreading rapidly in China and has now made its way to Malaysia. Reports suggest that provinces across China are witnessing a significant rise in flu-like illnesses, raising concerns about the potential for further outbreaks.

In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health has called for vigilance, advising the public to adhere to preventive measures. The situation has drawn comparisons to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, as hospitals in China are reportedly seeing a rise in admissions, particularly among children affected by the virus.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) primarily affects the respiratory tract and can cause severe illness in vulnerable groups, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Health experts warn that if the virus continues to spread unchecked, it could lead to a larger public health crisis. The Malaysian authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to report any flu-like symptoms and seek medical attention promptly.
