New York, April 6 (V7N) – Former President Barack Obama expressed concern this week that Americans may need to "possibly sacrifice" in order to defend democratic values. Speaking at Hamilton College in New York, Obama urged universities and law firms to resist intimidation from President Donald Trump's administration.
Obama criticized actions such as the suspension of security clearances and the cancellation of contracts with firms linked to political rivals. He warned that these actions were contrary to the basic principles Americans stand for.
In his discussion, Obama addressed the Trump administration's growing pressure on colleges and universities, particularly over federal grants. Reports indicated the administration had blocked $510 million in grants to Brown University and stripped $400 million from Columbia University, while imposing restrictions on Harvard University.
Obama emphasized the importance of universities standing firm in their values and not yielding to intimidation, highlighting that endowments should be used to defend their principles.
Although Obama did not directly name Trump, his comments marked a significant criticism of his successor and his administration's actions. He also alluded to other instances of retaliation against media and opposition voices, drawing a contrast with his own tenure.
Obama's remarks are some of his most direct critiques of Trump since the 2024 campaign began.
