Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Coast Guard have increased vigilance along the Teknaf border following reports of gunfire and mortar sounds emanating from Myanmar since Saturday night.

Local residents living near the border express fear and anxiety, prompting intensified patrols by both BGB and Coast Guard in the Hnila and Whykong unions as well as Shapuree Dwip areas.

According to Md Iliyas, a resident of Hnila union, the night was interrupted by the sound of heavy mortar shelling, causing unrest among the locals. Mohammad Alam, a UP member of ward no 8 of Whykong union parishad, confirmed hearing gunfire from the Myanmar border, urging people to remain vigilant.

Despite heightened security measures, Myanmar nationals continue attempting to cross into Bangladesh, with approximately 400 individuals intercepted and returned by law enforcement agencies.

Lieutenant Tahsin Rahman, media officer of Coast Guard Chittagong East Zone, emphasized increased patrolling along the Naf River to prevent unauthorized entry into Bangladesh.

Reports on Saturday indicated heavy shelling from Myanmar side across the Naf River, enveloping the Teknaf border area in Cox's Bazar with black smoke. The ongoing sound of mortar shells has instilled fear among the approximately 10,000 residents residing near the border.
