Dhaka, March 30, (V7N) — Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Sunday congratulated the women participants of the July uprising on receiving a prestigious US award, mentioning that this recognition is a powerful testament to their extraordinary bravery, leadership, and unwavering commitment during the 2024 student-led movement.

"On behalf of the interim government of Bangladesh, I extend my deepest congratulations to you all for being recognized with the prestigious 2025 United States Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award," he said in a message to the July konnya (July girls/women).

Yunus said their actions during that critical time exemplify the true meaning of courage.

"As leaders of the protest movement, you stood not only as symbols of resistance but as embodiments of hope for a nation in turmoil," he said.

"As the award states, with unflinching resolve, you confronted violent repression, stood between security forces and your male counterparts, and found innovative ways to continue the fight for justice, even amidst the severe challenges of a complete internet shutdown," said the chief adviser.

He said their strength, resilience, and determination continue to inspire countless individuals and communities, both within Bangladesh and globally.

"Your selfless efforts are a reminder to all of us that the pursuit of justice is never easy, but it is always worthwhile," Yunus said.

"You have shown the world what true leadership and sacrifice look like, and through your courage, you have paved the way for a brighter and more just future for Bangladesh," he mentioned.

Yunus said they are incredibly proud of each of them, and this recognition is a well-deserved honor that reflects their unwavering spirit.

"The interim government stands with you, and together, we will continue to work toward the ideals of democracy, justice, and freedom that you so valiantly defended. We look forward to you being front and center as Bangladesh moves ahead," Yunus added.

He congratulated them on this extraordinary achievement. "You have made all of Bangladesh proud."

A valiant group of women were key drivers in the student protest movement against violent repression in Bangladesh in July and August 2024, said the US Department of State.

They demonstrated extraordinary bravery, including standing between security forces and male protestors in spite of threats and violence, it added.

When male counterparts were arrested, these women found innovative ways to continue communication and lead the protests, defying censorship efforts, even during the complete shutdown of the internet, it continued.

The bravery and selflessness of these women amid uncertainty is the very definition of courage, said the US government.
