Rangamati, Feb 19, (V7N) - In protest against the imprisonment of central Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, a large rally was held by Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir in Rangamati city. The protest, organized by over 2,000 party activists, demanded the immediate release of the former central secretary, who has been imprisoned by the "fascist" government on charges they consider fabricated.
The protest march started from the Rangamati Municipal grounds in the afternoon, proceeding through the Rangamati-Chittagong Highway and culminating in a rally near the District Commissioner’s office and Banrupa traffic box.
Among the speakers were Rangamati district Jamaat’s Amir Professor Abdul Alim, Secretary Mohammad Mansurul Haque, Advocate Harunur Rashid, Shibir president Shahidul Islam Safi, and others. They condemned the wrongful imprisonment of ATM Azhar, stressing that despite the country gaining independence for the second time through the sacrifices of students and the public, a popular leader like Azharul Islam remains behind bars.
The leaders issued an ultimatum, demanding Azhar’s release within seven days, threatening a stronger movement if their demand is not met.
Additionally, Shahidul Islam Safi, president of the Rangamati district Shibir, raised questions about the presence of perpetrators of unrest during the 2013-14 "Gono Jagoron" movement, demanding legal action against them.
