Rangamati, Nov 23 (V7N) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) confiscated a substantial amount of illegal Indian cigarettes in Baghaichhari, Rangamati, following a tip-off on Sunday night. The raid took place around 8:30 p.m. along the Marishya–Dighinala Road in the Patenga Chara area, conducted by a vigilant team from BGB’s Marishya Zone under the supervision of Assistant Director Edy Hafizur Rahman.
During the operation, a motorcycle rider fled upon spotting the BGB team, leaving behind a bag containing contraband. A subsequent search revealed 100 cartons of illegal Indian cigarettes.
Local sources reported that the cigarettes were being transported from Sejok Suja Chakma to Dighinala, where individuals identified as Arman and Roni regularly smuggle such goods.
Lieutenant Colonel Mo. Zahidul Islam Zahid, Zone Commander of Marishya, confirmed the raid and stated that BGB’s ongoing efforts aim to curb smuggling in border areas, with similar operations to continue in the future.
Residents have expressed relief over the BGB’s consistent anti-smuggling operations. Earlier, 1,450 packets (145 cartons) of Indian cigarettes and a mini truck (Dhaka Metro–N–159382) were seized in Nolbonia, Khedarmara Union, during a similar operation on a fishing truck, also based on intelligence reports.
