Pabna, Dec 18 (V7N) — A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was shot dead by his cousin following a long-standing land dispute in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna on Wednesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Biru Mollah, 48, the convener of Lakshmikunda Union BNP and a resident of Kamalpur village under Lakshmikunda Union. He was the son of Abdul Mollah.

According to police and local sources, the dispute stemmed from ancestral land. On Tuesday, Biru Mollah’s cousin, Zahurul Mollah, allegedly excavated soil from the disputed land. On Wednesday morning, Biru Mollah went to Zahurul’s house with several local people to discuss the issue. An argument broke out during the discussion.

At one stage, Zahurul Mollah and his son reportedly fired blank shots and asked the group to leave. When they refused, the accused allegedly opened fire again, targeting the group. Biru Mollah was shot in the head and died on the spot.

Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station, Md. Mominuzzaman, confirmed the incident, saying that Biru Mollah had gone to resolve a family dispute when shots were fired from inside the house. The body was recovered and sent to the hospital for legal procedures.

Police said legal action is underway, and efforts are ongoing to arrest those involved in the killing.
