London, May 16 (V7N) — Manchester City secured the FA Cup title after defeating Chelsea 1-0 in a thrilling final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, completing a domestic cup double under manager Pep Guardiola.
City claimed their second trophy of the season following their League Cup triumph in March. The decisive goal came in the 72nd minute when Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo produced a stunning back-heel finish from an assist by Erling Haaland, beating Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez and sending the Wembley crowd into celebration.
The first half ended goalless in a tense and closely contested encounter, with both sides struggling to convert chances. Chelsea pushed hard for an equalizer in the second half, but opportunities from Enzo Fernández, João Pedro and Liam Delap failed to find the net.
The victory marked an emotional occasion for City captain Bernardo Silva and defender John Stones, who are both expected to leave the club after the season. The pair lifted the trophy together after receiving it from Prince William.
Speaking after the match, Bernardo Silva described the triumph as “very special” and insisted that City’s hopes of winning the Premier League title remain alive. Manchester City currently sit two points behind Arsenal in the league standings and will face Bournemouth next Tuesday in a crucial fixture.
For Chelsea, the defeat extended a disappointing run of seven consecutive domestic cup final losses. The London club’s American ownership group, known as “Blueco,” is reportedly searching for a permanent manager to replace interim coach Callum McFarlane. The latest setback has further damaged Chelsea’s hopes of securing European football next season.
The FA Cup victory also strengthened Guardiola’s remarkable record at Manchester City, with the club now having won eight FA Cup titles in the last decade, while Chelsea’s difficult season ended in further frustration.
