La Coruña, Jun 05 (V7N)-  Former world champions Spain suffered an unexpected setback in their first warm-up match ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, being held to a 1-1 draw by Iraq on home soil.

The international friendly, played in La Coruña on Thursday, saw Spain take an early lead through Barcelona forward Ferran Torres before Iraq fought back to earn a deserved draw thanks to a second-half equalizer from left-back Merchas Doski.

Spain nearly opened the scoring in the eighth minute when midfielder Álex Baena unleashed a powerful effort, but Iraqi goalkeeper Ahmed Basil produced an excellent save to keep the match level.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 16th minute. Ferran Torres collected the ball in midfield, drove forward with purpose, and finished brilliantly with his left foot from inside the penalty area to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

Despite enjoying overwhelming possession and controlling much of the opening period, Spain were unable to extend their lead. Iraq, who had less than 25 percent possession during the first half, capitalized on one of their few attacking opportunities.

In the 27th minute, Merchas Doski broke through the Spanish defense and calmly finished to level the score, silencing the home crowd and giving Iraq renewed confidence.

Spain dominated possession and created several chances throughout the remainder of the match, but Luis de la Fuente's side failed to find a winning goal despite sustained pressure.

The draw raises questions for Spain as they continue preparations for the World Cup. They will face Peru in another friendly on June 9 before opening their 2026 World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on June 15.

For Iraq, the result represents a significant morale boost and demonstrates their ability to compete against one of world football's traditional powerhouses.
