Lisbon, Sep 06 (V7N) – Cristiano Ronaldo, widely regarded as the world’s most popular footballer, reached a historic milestone by scoring his 900th career goal in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Croatia in the UEFA Nations League. The 39-year-old Portuguese superstar became the first player in history to achieve this incredible feat.

Ronaldo, who had scored 899 goals in matches for Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, reached the coveted 900-goal mark with a first-half strike against Croatia on Thursday night. His goal, coming in the 34th minute from a Nuno Mendes cross, secured a comfortable lead for Portugal after Diogo Dalot's opening goal in the 7th minute from a Bruno Fernandes assist.

Croatia, trailing 2-0 at halftime, managed to narrow the gap to 2-1 thanks to an own goal by Dalot in the 41st minute. Despite several attempts to equalise, led by Luka Modric, Croatia couldn't overcome Portugal's solid defence.

Ronaldo, emotional after achieving the milestone, said, "900 goals feels like any other milestone, but only I know how hard I had to work every day to score these 900 goals. This is a unique achievement in my career, and I am very proud. I’m 39 years old, and these records make me emotional."

With the win, Portugal secured three points in their opening Nations League match. In the other Group A game, Poland edged out Scotland with a 3-2 victory.

Ronaldo’s 900-goal record further solidifies his legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time, with fans and analysts alike hailing his continued brilliance at the highest level of the sport.
