WASHINGTON, Dec 30, (V7N) – Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away on Sunday at the age of 100, his nonprofit Carter Center announced. Carter died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family, after spending nearly two years in hospice care.
Born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924, Carter rose from modest beginnings as a peanut farmer to serve as governor of Georgia and, later, as president from 1977 to 1981. His presidency was marked by notable achievements, including the historic Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, and a strong emphasis on human rights and social justice.
"My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love," Chip Carter, his son, said in a statement.
Despite a challenging presidency marred by the Iran hostage crisis and an oil crisis, Carter’s post-presidential work redefined his legacy.
Carter founded the Carter Center in 1982, focusing on global diplomacy, election monitoring, and disease eradication. His efforts earned him the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. Over the years, he became an international mediator and advocate for social and economic justice.
Carter, known for his deep Christian faith, taught Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains into his 90s. His life was guided by principles of justice, humility, and service.
