Kyiv, August 30- A Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet, recently delivered by NATO allies, was shot down by Russian forces, according to a statement from the Ukrainian military. The incident occurred on Monday during a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv.

Oleksiy Mays, the Ukrainian pilot flying the F-16, was killed by a Russian missile during the engagement. Before being hit, Mays managed to intercept three incoming enemy missiles and thwart a drone attack, showcasing remarkable skill and bravery, according to the Ukrainian military's report.

The loss of the F-16 fighter jet is a significant blow to Ukraine's defense efforts, especially following the recent announcement by President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding the deployment of U.S.-built F-16s to bolster Ukraine's defenses against Russian aggression. Zelensky had been preparing to discuss a comprehensive victory strategy involving these fighter jets with the United States next month.

In light of the attack, the Netherlands has announced it will provide an additional 24 fighter jets and more weapons to Ukraine to support its ongoing conflict with Russia. The Dutch government emphasized that Ukraine could use these weapons freely, as long as their actions remain within the bounds of humanitarian law.

President Zelensky also expressed a desire to obtain permission from Western allies to use long-range weapons to target locations inside Russia. This request indicates a shift in Ukraine's military strategy, aiming to take a more offensive stance in response to continued Russian aggression.

The situation remains tense as both sides continue to escalate their military actions, raising concerns about further developments in the conflict.
